The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) was founded by royal order on April 14, 1837, and officially inaugurated on May 3, 1837, by the then-King of Greece, Othona, and called after the "Othonian University". It was the first university in Greece, the Balkan Peninsula, and the Eastern Mediterranean.The "Othonian University" was renamed the "National University" in 1862, following the events that prompted Greece's then-King Othon to leave the country. Following Greece's liberty in 1932, the "National University" was officially renamed the "National and Kapodistrian University of Athens" in honor of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the country's first Governor.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is the first Greek university to be rated among the top 200 universities in the world, according to a worldwide general ranking of universities that considers multiple criteria. More specifically, according to the "Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities" global rating, published on January 28, 2021, EKPA is ranked 180th out of 12,000 universities worldwide. It should be noticed that UoA has risen 53 ranks over the previous year's ranking (from 233 to 180). In addition, it is in 49th place among the 3262 Universities of the European Union included in this ranking.
According to the "Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities," the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki follows the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in position 205, the National Technical University of Athens in position 329, the University of Patras in position 533, and the University of Ioannina in position 581. The published rating includes around 12,000 universities globally, out of 30,000 for which data was collected. They include Greek universities and private organizations.
Furthermore, on January 26, 2022, the Webometrics global ranking "Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations" results were released.
According to this insight and previous years' results, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has achieved an outstanding achievement for a Greek university: it is ranked in the top 100 globally for the fifth consecutive year.
